Housing Project in Pink Hues References Amman Old Buildings

Greenwood Barton Architects have recently finished a housing project in Hweteh that references Ammani buildings from the 80’s.

The Ola Apartments are located in Hweteh, South of Amman, just off the main road on the way to the airport. Hweteh joins several other newly formed neighborhoods which have emerged to serve Amman’s rapidly growing population.

Being developer led housing, the apartment building confirms to its context. It is four stories, plus two basement floors, it occupies the whole of the setback area and is essentially a concrete frame with blockwork infill.

However, It also refers to examples of good housing development in Amman. Mainly projects from the 1980’s, which take account of public space and attempt to establish continuity with buildings from previous eras.

These projects were derived from European modernism but became specific in relation to climate, color and the relationship between the public and the private.

The Ola Apartments are reminiscent of these projects. Bands of stone which protrude from the facade emphasize the horizontality of the volume and serve multiple functions. They provide shading, accommodate planters (which are irrigated with rainwater collected from the roof) and conceal external roller shutters, allowing for a fully sealed building envelope.

Strips of grey/pink render are interrupted by windows and open South West facing loggias. While the construction utilizes standard materials and known ways of building these are separated out and reorganized with a view to minimizing cold bridging and improving the performance of the facade in both summer and winter.

Each floor consists of three dual aspect apartments separated by two top lit staircases. The floor plans are organized in two halves, responding to the orientation of the building.

Bedrooms, bathrooms and circulation spaces face North East and are therefore bright in the morning and cool in the evening, while living and entertaining spaces, which face South West, are bright throughout the day.
